Scheepswerf en Machinefabriek De Merwede BV
Founded in 1902 as a small boat yard, Merwede rapidly grew into a shipyard building ocean-going vessels. In-house disciplines - carpentry, valve engineering and ship repair - grew correspondingly and developed eventually into individual operational business units. The largest division concerns shipbuilding, due to the sheer magnitude a contract represents in both technical and financial terms. The other divisions, though, are recognized leaders in their own right. As an average Merwede employs approximately 400 permanent staff and workers. The premises of the company are located at Hardinxveld-Giessendam, just east of Rotterdam, on the banks of the river Merwede, which gave its name to the company. The river Merwede is part of the aquastrada between Rotterdam/Europort and Germany's Rhine-Ruhr area. The status of the river has led to the regional infrastructure being extremely well developed with numerous companies linked into a marine manufacture, supply and delivery chain. Holland, probably, is one of the world's most industrialized areas due to its many inland waterways giving good access to the hinterland. This is particularly advantageous to the shipbuilding industry, where large and heavy constructions have to be handled and so navigable waterways offer a means of transport second to none. The excellent infrastructure of the country guarantees efficient co-operation between companies, which is imperative in meeting time-sensitive deliveries and quality standards. A major part of Holland came to be through the very process of dredging, building dikes and reclaiming land, including the region where Merwede is situated. Many dredging contractors started their business here and some still have their head offices in the same place. For Merwede, to be amongst the Dutch dredging majors, proved to be an incentive for successfully maintaining a dedicated dredge building line next to the range of merchant vessels. |
